Superman & Lois is getting another season. The CW has announced that the Man of Steel and intrepid reporter will be back for a shortened 10-episode season four.

The news comes after months of speculation on the show’s fate and negotiations to keep it on the air. The renewal was contingent upon running a shorter season and potentially reducing the number of supporting cast members. Budgetary concerns over the cost of special effects may also affect the series, putting the focus more on the family drama than the superhero aspects. The show may also share streaming rights with Max.

Superman & Lois was created by Arrowverse architect Greg Berlanti and Todd Helbing, debuting in 2021. The series began when super-family Clark Kent/Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) and Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch), and their sons Jordan (Alex Garfin) and Jonathan (originally Jordan Elsass, now Michael Bishop) moved from Metropolis to Smallville. The show follows their transition to the small town, family dynamics, emerging superpowers, and supervillains.

With the recent news that freshman series Gotham Knights is not being renewed, this will make Superman & Lois the only DC series on The CW. If the series ends with season four, it will mark a huge turning point in the network that birthed the Arrowverse’s interconnected shows and has had a DC superhero show on the air since Smallville debuted in 2001.

“We are thrilled to bring All American: Homecoming and Superman & Lois back to The CW,” The CW Network President of Entertainment Brad Schwartz said. “These series are two of our strongest performers across our linear and digital platforms with some of the most passionate fanbases in all of television. We are grateful to our partners at Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions for their continued collaboration, and we cannot wait to get started on the new seasons.”
