Tarzan: Complete Newspaper Strips – 1971-1974
IDW Publishing; $49.99
As we said when we reviewed the second volume in this series, while Russ Manning’s tenure on the Lord of the Jungle may not be remembered for the detail of Hal Foster or Burne Hogarth and their rightfully celebrated periods on the strip, his Tarzan is every bit as compelling and perhaps even more accessible.
The third volume in this series (with one more to go) makes this abundantly clear.
Again, not to in any way dismiss or slight Foster’s and Hogarth’s work. Their respective stints on the character remain stunning examples of what can be done with comics. Manning’s work, though, very seductively engages and pulls the reader into the beautiful and savage world of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ most famous creation.
Also again, our thanks to The Library of American Comics for collecting this overlooked period.
