The tabloid-sized collections in Volume 4 (1938 dailies and Sundays), Volume 5 (1939 dailies and Sundays), and Volume 6 (1940 dailies and Sundays) of Milton Caniff’s Terry And The Pirates present material that is simultaneously a time capsule, a look into a bygone era, and also a veritable “how to” in adventure storytelling in comic strip form.

In their marketing materials, the Library of American Comics (LOAC) calls this oversized format “an unparalleled upgrade that no Terry fan can afford to pass up.” While publishers regularly engage in hyperbole, this statement is far from hype. We have previously touted LOAC as the gold standard for comic strip reprints, but Dean Motter, Bruce Canwell, and company have well and truly outdone themselves with this incarnation of Terry.
