The Original Star Sapphire Turns 75
Star Sapphire is a moniker that has been used by many DC characters on both sides of the hero-villain coin. While characters like Carol Ferris might be better known, the original Star Sapphire was introduced 75 years ago.
The first Star Sapphire was created by Robert Kanigher and Lee Elias, and debuted in All-Flash Comics #32 (December 1947-January 1948). She had been rejected and exiled by the Zamarons, though they did leave her with a Sapphire Star Gem.
The gem granted her powers like dimensional travel, illusion casting, decelerated aging, and she could create a floating stair that she’d use to travel through the Seventh Dimension. It also gave her the power to banish people to the Fifth Dimension.
She came to Earth claiming to be the queen from the Seventh Dimension with the goal of conquering the planet. Her plan involved destroying plant life to stamp out the oxygen needed by humans, but the Golden Age Flash Jay Garrick stopped her.
When she returned, Star Sapphire tried to control the new Star Sapphire, Carol Ferris, to kill Hal Jordan, but once again her plan was stopped.
