Halloween is just over a month away, so it’s the perfect time to dig into some scary comics. A new, indie entry worth checking out is The Rejected by Stan Konopka. It tells the story of a boy who is bullied. He’s bullied at school, he’s abused at home, and all he wants is friends. Enter the Rejected, a group of wraith-like demonic entities who promise to protect him as long as he will assist them when they ask for help.
In the first half, The Rejected foreshadows a “be careful what you wish for” tale, but it reveals itself to be darker than that. This boy isn’t just bullied, he has his own mean streak and the moral quandary of who is good and who is evil becomes blurry. It’s an interesting horror story with some twisted moments.
