In 1973 one of the greatest horror films of all time made its debut in theaters. Based on his novel, William Peter Blatty wrote a screenplay and William Friedkin directed a movie that brought to life one of our worst fears. The end product was so frightening that many audiences left before the end credits rolled.

The movie opens with Father Lankester Merrin (Max von Sydow) examining a mysterious stone head near Nineveh, setting an ominous tone. Meanwhile the young priest Father Damian Karras (Jason Miller) in Georgetown is having a crisis of faith when his mother is fighting a terminal illness. The central plot focuses on young actress Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn) and her daughter Regan (Linda Blair), living in Georgetown.

When Chris notices bizarre changes in her daughter, including the ability to levitate, she takes her to the hospital to find out what is wrong. After a series of tests, some painful, a doctor recommends exorcism. He explains that since her symptoms are psychosomatic because of a possible possession, nothing they can do will help her. The downtrodden Father Karras agrees to perform the exorcism with the help of Father Merrin who had been summoned to Washington. What follows is a terrifying fight for the young girl between the priests and the demon inside her.

The Exorcist remains today, a very scary movie. Based on a documented exorcism in 1949 that had been performed on a young teenage boy, it was part of the influx of demonic child movies, including The Omen and Rosemary’s Baby. Unlike many horror films, The Exorcist won critical praise. It received ten Academy Award nominations, including Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Director, and won for Best Sound and Best Adapted Screenplay.
