Frequently – very frequently – when color is added to material originally intended to be published in black and white, the results are underwhelming. The color often looks forced, it muddies the art, and diminishes the storytelling. Thank goodness that’s not the case here! Kudos to creator Robert Kirkman and colorist Dave McCaig for what has thus far turned out to be a superb process on bringing The Walking Dead into color.
Not only doesn’t the color hurt the process, it actually adds to the atmosphere. That’s saying something with a well-established title like this.
Adding to the experience are Kirkman’s “The Cutting Room Floor” segments, which issue-by-issue look at his original plots, what made the cut, and what didn’t. The insight for TWD fans is incredible.
Also new for these editions are a slew of variant covers, almost all of which have been great. That said. David Finch’s covers have been incredible and you can’t go wrong with them.
