In 2007, writer-director Michael Dougherty (Krampus) released Trick ‘r Treat, a horror anthology that has become required Halloween viewing for horror fans. The film tells four frightening tales with twists, jump scares and slow burns, and monsters, both human and otherwise.
The film reveals the secret life of an otherwise unsuspecting school principal (Dylan Baker), a young woman’s (Anna Paquin) quest for a date brings out the predators, a teenage prank goes terribly wrong, and a cantankerous old man (Brian Cox) learns the consequences of not observing Halloween traditions. As these stories are happening Sam (short for Samhain), a tiny but menacing trick ‘r treater, witnesses and participates in the twisted scenarios.
Now, the modern classic Halloween horror film is getting a 4K restoration courtesy of Arrow Films. The limited edition 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray with Dolby Vision will be available on October 29, 2024. It comes with a double-sided foldout poster and reversible sleeve with original and new art by Sara Deck, six art cards, and an illustrated collector’s booklet by Becky Darke and Heather Wixson. The Trick ‘r Treat 4K will be available with new cover art of little Sam and his burlap sack head and with an exclusive edition slipcover featuring the original poster art.
There are tons of special features, including archival audio commentary by Dougherty, conceptual artist Breehn Burns, storyboard artist Simeon Wilkins, and composer Douglas Pipes. The featurettes are “Tales of Folklore & Fright,” “Tales of Mischief & Mayhem: Filming Trick ‘r Treat,” “Sounds of Shock & Superstition: Scoring Trick ‘r Treat,” and “Tales of Dread & Despair: Releasing Trick ‘r Treat.”
It includes Doughtery’s short film Season’s Greetings with optional commentary, and “The Lore and Legends of Halloween” narrated by Cox. It also has the school bus VFX comparison, additional scenes, FEARnet promos, Sam O’Lantern, storyboard and conceptual artwork gallery, behind the scenes gallery, Monster Mash comic book set in the Trick ‘r Treat universe, and the trailer.
The limited edition 4k Trick ‘r Treat can be preordered on Arrow Video’s website.
