Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #1

Marvel; $3.99

We’re getting somewhat of a sense of déjà vu with this, given that we technically reviewed a book by the same title and issue number back in January. But, that said, despite being “only the second #1 so far this year,” Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #1 does a fine job at kicking off the next chapter in Doreen Green’s story. She, along with Koi Boi and Chipmunk Hunk, continue to assist the locals while balancing their school lives. But things get a little more complicated after former Hydra agent Brain Drain shows up.

I’d honestly say that the #1 from January is a better jumping-on point than this new #1, since this story assumes that the reader already knows who the supporting cast is. That said, with the creative team of writer Ryan North and artist Erica Henderson (who managed to sneak in a solid background gag regarding the Great Lakes Avengers, of which Squirrel Girl used to be a part of), it’s pretty obvious that this next volume will match the first in terms of humor and creativity. For existing Squirrel Girl fans, this is a must-read.
