When Cloak Met Dagger
Cloak and Dagger are a superhero duo who have been a part of the X-Men, Secret Avengers, and Runaways in their mission to help other teenagers. Created by Bill Mantlo and Ed Hannigan, they were introduced in Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man #64 (March 1982).
Ty Johnson/Cloak and Tandy Bowen/Dagger met in New York City after they both ran away from home. Tandy was a 16-year-old from Shaker Heights, Ohio who left because her supermodel mother was more concerned with her social life than taking care of her daughter. Ty was a 17-year-old who fled Boston when he couldn’t stop police from shooting his friend after they mistakenly assumed he had robbed a store.
When the pair first met, Ty was debating stealing Tandy’s purse until someone else took it and he chased the thief down to retrieve the bag. Soon after they became friends, they were abducted and taken to Simon Marshall, a chemist who was developing synthetic heroin and testing it on lost teenagers.
Tandy and Ty survived the tests, but it gave them both superpowers. Ty became Cloak, with the ability to teleport himself and others through a shroud of Darkforce energy. He can make himself intangible and invisible, can see and draw strength from the fears of people he touches, and use his darkness to make people insane. As Dagger, Tandy can create daggers of Lightforce to disorient opponents, inflict pain, and cleanse people of corruption or addiction. She has healing light, purifying blasts, and can see and take hope from people she touches.
Adjusting to their new abilities, Ty found himself shrouded in darkness and Tandy started glowing with light. In retaliation for what he did to them, they attacked Marshall’s henchmen with Ty absorbing them in darkness and Tandy shot them with daggers of light. After that, they decided to become the team of Cloak and Dagger to help other runaways and fight drug related crime.
